Jangbu Sherpa fra Mopung gik hele vejen igennem til kandidateksamen
I was an ordinary boy in remote area of Solukhumbu. I completed my secondary school from Junbesi Secondary School walking an hour daily to get to School and same to get back home. Besides that, I had to help my parents in farming and grazing cattle before and after school. I completed my SLC (class 10) in 1999 in first division which was very rare in the history of our school, so both my teachers and parents have very much faith in me that I could do better in future if I got chance to study further. Even though my parents were uneducated, they knew the value of education for better life. So, they sent me to Kathmandu to get higher education. Being a first boy from school, I got some scholarships from Himalayan Trust but it was not enough to support to the costs involved in college fees and living expenses which I had to manage myself, so I chose night class to study education stream (Intermediate of Education) so that I could do some jobs to bear the costs of all these as my parents were not able to support me fully because they had to look after my younger brother and sisters too.
Then one day, I got chance to meet up with Kurt Lomborg (Papa Kurt) in Kathmandu and talked with him about the scenario of village where there were no educated people except few teachers. After hearing my story, academic performances, and my dream of becoming a doctor but only financial constraint was the reason for not being able to study Class 12 in science stream (mandatory for study doctor), Papa Kurt was convinced that I could study doctor if I got support. Then he went back to his country and look for some donors who were willing to help me. Fortunately, few months later, it was confirmed that donors were ready to support me for my further education. That was the turning point in my life making a great decision switching my subject from Education to Science. After passing Class 12 in Science, I got selected to study Bachelor of Dental Surgery in government scholarship program. Financial support from Himalayan Project was continued throughout as I needed to pay for hostel fee, food, and other stationary items. After completing my Bachelor of Dental Science in 2008, I went to work at Community Dental Services Center at District Hospital in Solukhumbu for two years through NGO (Himalayan Health and Environment Services). During that time, I also got the chance to conduct numerous dental health camps in remote and under privileged communities and schoolchildren who must walk a whole day or few more days to get to the nearest dental treatment center. I used to give oral hygiene education and awareness, simple fillings and extractions and referred to the District Hospital where I worked for those who needed extensive treatments.
In 2012, I went to China to study Master of Dental Surgery for three years through government scholarship, and the support from Himalayan Project continued till the end of my study. After returning to my country in 2015, I worked at Kanti Children’s Hospital for two years as Consultant Orthodontist. Currently, I own a Dental Practice in Kathmandu and every year, I go back to my village to do dental camps along with medical camp to serve needy people.
I would like to express my sincere thanks to my beloved parents, respected Papa Kurt, Mummy, Himalayan Project Nepal and all my generous donors for this life changing support, kindness and love you have given me and keeping faith in me. I couldn’t have made it through the challenging experience without the help and support I received from you all.
